December 2020
Early after diagnosis, we went on a mission to find answers. That research brought us quickly to alternative therapies as traditional medicine offers no current treatments to fix the root cause. We found the Phoenix area a great place to start our journey back to health so we made our trek to stay with our son and his girlfriend, Jesse and Kirsten. Here are some pictures of our travels from Grapeview, WA to Phoenix, AZ. We wanted to take our time and do a little exploring on our way so went via the OR / CA coast all the way to the Napa Valley region. Then we headed across CA to AZ.

Made it to Napa, CA. Always was on our “list” of places to go so why not? Besides, it was our 33rd anniversary.

Happy Anniversary!

Made it to AZ!
AZ is a beautiful place. We did a day trip to Sedona and another to Mogollon Rim. Jesse and Kirsten are excellent hosts AND tour guides!

The holidays were nice. Pretty low key but nice to be in good weather. Spent a lot of time eating good food and spending time together.

2021
Doctors and alternative treatments –
Began 2021 with appointments at the Mayo to confirm diagnosis and get on the list for their Stem Cell Trial. Their ALS clinic is top notch from a conventional medical approach and we are glad to have them on our team. Besides Mayo, we have reached out and begun testing with a functional medicine doctor in Phoenix. He is a “root cause” doctor and tries to find out what imbalances or issues could have triggered ALS and then treats them. So far, we have started some treatments and detoxing. It’s quite a process with many different supplements to take. Along with that, Bill is doing hyperbaric oxygen therapy which is in itself a type of detox as many pathogens cannot live in a oxygen rich environment. We also purchased a IR Sauna for detoxing and he uses it several days a week. Bill also got seen by the ALS Clinic for the VA. Great to add to our team.
Major changes –
AZ is soon to be our permanent home! In late February we signed papers on a house in the Cave Creek area of Phoenix. We will be relocating in April along with Bill’s mom, Marilyn. This home and property are all one level which will help tremendously as we move through this journey. We are looking forward to getting settled and being able to focus on health and healing.

In March, we decided to take a quick trip to Carlsbad, CA for a treatment that we learned about from the documentary Heal at the Center for Neuroacoustic Research. Dr. Thompson finds the sound frequency in your body that brings your sympathetic and parasympathetic system into balance (homeostasis). We really enjoyed the education, treatments, and resulting Delta soundtracks Bill can listen to daily. While we were there, we also found a place that does NAD infusions. We got started on those and then found a wonderful Nurse only a few minutes away from our new home location who could continue on those infusions as well as adding in some of her own protocols. We also were able to enjoy a bit of the view from our condo in Oceanside.

And what would March in Arizona be without some “Spring Training”! We took advantage of the 25% capacity games to enjoy some family time at a couple of the games.

And then we made a trip to our local rodeo that just reopened on Friday nights! What a fun time and another great visit with one of the boys.

APRIL / MAY 2021
Relocating and Settling In
April and May have been busy, busy with the move of our life combining many households into one. We had the best support team with our family and best neighbors ever, The Kummerfeldts. We can’t thank them all enough!

New memories and new adventures await in AZ – We are looking forward to healing and including family and friends to enjoy fun in the sun at our new home.

JUNE 2021
We have added a few new therapies to Bill’s schedule now that we are getting settled. One of those therapies is Aqua Physical Therapy. This will be important and we are happy to have a pool that we will be able to continue the therapy long term.

And juicing some fresh fruit and vegies for optimum nutrition –

We also were happy to get tickets given to us by the AZ ALS Chapter to go to the first MLB Lou Gehrig’s day, June 2nd, at an Arizona Diamondbacks game!

A Boost to Healing
As time has come and gone, it has become tiring for Bill to eat and get the nutrition and supplements he needs. In light of that, we are happy to go to the Mayo and get a PEG feeding tube installed. Our prayer is it will be the boost he needs to gain back some of the lost weight and make it easier to focus on healing. He still can have foods by mouth but this will take the effort out of the process. An exciting development in this journey.

The next few months we are excited to have some family and some friends come for a visit! They are brave, as this time of year is of course the hottest and the heat is ramping up quickly with forecasts this week as high as 117. More to come so keep following our blog. We are happy to share the journey.
2nd half 2021 –
The 2nd half of 2021 have been busy to say the least. We’ve enjoyed some great times with family and even some treasured friends.

Heck, we even made a trip to Sitka, Alaska where we were able to be with our grandson Fisher to witness his special fishing trip we planned the prior year but weren’t able to go because of covid. It wasn’t easy to travel, but we did it and were happy we did.

In the last several months, Bill has been doing a lot of different modalities all trying to find the secret combination of therapies to heal and repair. From our research and studies of those who’ve reversed this disease, it is an individual journey, not a one-size-fits-all protocol. From IV ozone and IV Poly MVA, to EMS, chi machine, vibration machine, OT/PT, focused meditation and visualization, and more supplements than we can count. One of the favorites is poolside stretch and flex. Bill has also received great benefits from the VA in regards to ALS including a custom wheelchair and van. Super thankful for their support.
We’ve begun to settle in to our new home in AZ and started on the list of many projects all the while trying to do what we can to stay focused and positive on the healing journey. The holidays were fun and it was great to see most of the family although not all at one time as in the past. Progression has continued through 2021 but I can say now in January 2022, it feels like a turn for the better is on its way. It’s hard to predict the timing of it all, and from everything we’ve learned from other Pals (people with ALS), it can be a rocky road and rough ride with many ups and downs. That said, we are committed to doing the best we can and persevering.

We have some new protocols in store for 2022, one of which is a road trip to Florida to http://www.bodyscience.life. They have had some success with Pals and helping them get to the root cause and reverse some of their symptoms. They work up a very individualized plan and modify it as necessary depending on results. One of our campaigns for 2022 is to raise awareness for the “N of 1”. That means a single person trial and personal journey to create wellness when the mainstream medicine says there’s no cure. Pondering that message, we came up with 3 steps for the N of 1.
Step One: Courage
Step Two: Determination
Step Three: Perserverance
With that, we came up with a logo and created t-shirts to use as a fundraiser for anyone who’d like to support Bill’s journey. The cost is $35 each plus shipping. If you’d like to join our team, please email Nof1mission@gmail.com. Give us your sizes and whether you want men’s, women’s, or youth. The color is actually a turquoise as in the pictures above.

As always, thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers. We have big hopes for 2022 and will keep you posted along the way. First stop, Miami Florida – countdown to departure 15 days! Best to you and yours!
